New Families to Congdon, please come to Congdon Thursday, August 27th between 5:30 and 7pm.  There will be school tours from 5:30-6:00 and then opportunities to learn about PTA membership, the Congdon Foundation and volunteer opportunities.  This will also give you a chance to get some paperwork done (yearbook, directory, PTA membership and more!).  There will also be mini sessions with the principal for further information.  Don’t miss it!


Our back to school open house will be the following week on September 2nd from 4:30-6pm.  Here is your chance to see your child’s classroom and drop off school supplies.  There will also be opportunities to pick up and turn in paperwork (PTA membership, volunteer opportunities, One and Done, etc).  It’s an exciting night in preparation for the coming school year.  See you there!




Whether there are tears or a bounce in your step after dropping your children off on the first day of school, come and talk with other parents and have coffee and goodies on September 8th at 7:45am in the cafeteria!  It’s going to be a great year!

Thanks to all the wonderful students, teachers,staff and parents that made this a fabulous school year.  Farewell to the outgoing 5th graders and parents…..Congdon Park will miss you and hope you remember your time here with fondness!  We hope the Weekly News helped everyone stay in touch with what was going on.  Here are our last farewell bits of information - hope everyone has a fantastic summer!  See you again in September.   



REMINDER FOR 5th GRADE PARENTS:  If this is your last child at Congdon, please remember to turn in your pick up number to the office as you will no longer need it.  Thanks!!


Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to everyone who helped out with the PTA this year.  So many things that go on at Congdon could not happen without you, so please give yourselves a giant pat on the back and a round of applause!

Thanks for your support. The Congdon Plant Sale was a great success, raising over $1000!  The money will go towards a mosaic bench project in the Fall and saving towards a greenhouse. A special thanks to all the growers: Bonnie Ambrosi, Sarah Beaster, Judy Derauf (Congdon parent alum), Michelle Hoffman, Jeana Marshak, Sarah McCourtney, Joni Notaro (grandmother of Congdon students), & Renee Willemsen. Thanks to Betsy Schwartz for organizing perennial donations and Alaina Pilate and Student Green Team for splitting perennials in school garden and Mary for perennial donations.



The New Page Dumpster will be unlocked for paper drop-off 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. weekdays during the summer. The New Page, GREEN DUMPSTER, is located in the small parking lot off Greysolon Place.

We have a few extra yearbooks in the office to sell.  Price for 5th graders is $10.00; price for other grades/teachers is going to be $15.00.  5th graders are receiving a first chance to buy one of the yearbooks.  If your fifth grader did not buy a yearbook, have him/her bring their money and yearbook form to the office right away (Jane has more forms in the office if needed).  Beginning Wednesday, 5/2, all other grades will have a chance to buy these extra yearbooks.  First come, first served!   Cash or checks should go to the office.  Kids will receive their yearbooks from their teacher on the last day of school.



ALL PARENT VOLUNTEERS FOR ART ADVENTURES NEXT SCHOOL YEAR 2015-16.  Our ART set is going to be Amazing Animals in Art for October and November next school year.  We would love your volunteer efforts to keep Art in all the classrooms!  Please contact Becky Hartley at bekstam@gmail.com or text/call 218-349-4843 for more information.   Info will be sent out in September.




Would you like to help with the school garden or be informed of garden events? There are several upcoming opportunities: helping classes plant the garden and adopting the garden for a week in the summer with simple watering/weeding. Reel Paddling Film Festival June 3rd at the Zeitgeist

The Reel Paddling Film Festival includes films on a variety of paddle disciplines.  There are amazing door prizes and raffle items.  Doors open at 6pm.  Tickets ($10) are available at Ski Hut and also at the door.  It is being sponsored by Paddle Duluth, a new organization helping to promote and further a component of the mission of the Western St. Louis River Corridor Project that our city is supporting and needing your support.   

We have a great new line up of films that cover everything from racing gorgeous Canadian rivers for 24 straight hours, to reeling in a 2000 lb fish in a plastic kayak, to getting to the soul and passion behind flat water expeditions and nail-biting white water plunges down mystic rivers.


UMD Summer Art Camp

UMD Summer Art Camp for children in Grades K-5.  Fridays, 10 am – noon on June 12, 19, 26 & July 10.

UMD Professor Alison Aune, along with UMD Art in Elementary Education students, will instruct classes in sculpture, drawing and watercolor painting with a special guest appearance by Cheng-Khee Chee .  The last day of class includes an exhibition and reception.   Class fee is $45. Learn to Skate summer skating lessons

The Duluth Figure Skating Club is offering summer session skating classes on Monday evenings, 5:30-6:00 and 6:00-6:30 from June 8 - July 30th at Mars Lakeview Arena.  Cost is $95 due by June 1st (registrations after June 1st - $105).  Register online at www.duluthfsc.org.  Questions? True North AmeriCorps is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 program year. AmeriCorps is often considered the domestic version of the Peace Corps; AmeriCorps trains members to serve in areas of need within our community. True North AmeriCorps is currently looking to fill 40 positions to serve in schools and nonprofits in Duluth and Proctor, mentoring youth and tutoring them in reading and math. 12-month full- and part-time positions are available and begin in August 2015. Earn approximately $1000 (FT) or $500 (PT)/month, student loan deferment, health insurance coverage (FT only), a free YMCA membership, opportunities for professional development and connecting to the community, and a $5775.00 (FT)/$2887.50 education award upon successful completion of the program. What an amazing turnout for Congdon's Bike/Walk day!!! Over 270 students arrived on foot or bike along with MANY parents, teachers and staff!! A special thanks to Josh Gorhum from St Louis County Public Health along with Pat Heffernan, Laverne Hagen, Kathi Kusch-Marshall, Bart Polacsek, Amy White, Pete & Renee Willemsen for your assistance.

Shifts will be 1) set up from 7-8am 2) 7:45-10:00 and 3) 9:45-12:00 4) 12:30-2:15.  Lunch will be provided for all volunteers from 12:00-12:30. Vegetable of the Year: POTATO growing demos and a free seed potato. Upcoming projects the sale will support: School Art Classes will "Up-Cycle" Outdoor Classroom cement benches with tile mosaics; Class Gardening Projects; & Saving for a Green House.



If you have perennials that can be split and shared, please consider donating to the Congdon Park Annual Plant Sale. Donations of potted perennials can be dropped off the day of the sale at the school front door or in the atrium if the weather is poor. Donations can also be dropped off earlier that week if needed, please contact Betsy Schwartz (bschwar1ster@gmail.com) to arrange a drop off time.  




The 7th ANNUAL CONGDON COUGAR CHASE Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at Lester Park in Duluth, MN.

Join us Saturday, May 30, 2015 for the 7th annual Congdon Cougar Chase Kitty K, 1K, 5K, & 10K.  The CCC is the largest fundraiser for the Congdon Park Foundation.  This year all race proceeds will go to the purchase of 35 Google Nexus 7 tablets, software and charging cart.  In addition to the race t-shirt the CCC will be offering pre-order tech shirts.  This order form along with the pledge sheet and paper registration will be coming home with students soon.  Online registration can be completed at https://register.chronotrack.com/reg/form?eventID=13097

Students who bike or walk to school the morning of the 21st will receive a free t-shirt. If you need a helmet, please contact the office as there are a few available.

A big THANK YOU to our wonderful Congdon parents who bought items and donated cash at our bake sale for the three families who lost everything in the apartment fire during the April break!!!   Congdon staff held the sale the night of the Talent Show; everyone was so very generous!  We received $948 in cash and also three Target and three Walgreen’s gift cards that were divided between the three families!!!  THANK YOU, thank you, thank you!!! The 7th ANNUAL CONGDON COUGAR CHASE Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at Lester Park in Duluth, MN.

Join us Saturday, May 30, 2015 for the 7th annual Congdon Cougar Chase Kitty K, 1K, 5K, & 10K.  The CCC is the largest fundraiser for the Congdon Park Foundation.  This year all race proceeds will go to the purchase of 35 Google Nexus 7 tablets, software and charging cart.  In addition to the race t-shirt the CCC will be offering pre-order tech shirts.  This order form along with the pledge sheet and paper registration will be coming home with students soon.  Online registration can be completed at https://register.chronotrack.com/reg/form?eventID=13097

Camp Esquagama

A traditional summer camp experience in the Northwoods, not too far away in Gilbert, MN.  Offering day camp and traditional sleep away camp for kids 4-17. See attached for youth camp schedule and fees.  The camp also will be providing transportation for anyone who wants or needs it from Miller Hill Mall in Duluth.




Rookie Rugby


With the help of UMD’s 2x national championship rugby team, the YMCA is starting a rookie rugby program for boys and girls ages 7-15.  This is a safe, non-contact, easy to play game that introduces the basics of rugby. Wednesdays, June 10th-August 19th from 5-6:30pm at the upper field at Lowell.  Cost is $50.  Go to www.duluthymca.org to register. Questions? 2015 Duluth East Youth Football Registration for Grades 3-8th, will be held at Ordean East Middle school, May 27th and May 28th from 5-7pm, in the lobby.

As you may remember, many families were displaced by a fire during the April break that burned their apartment building on 2nd Street and 17th Avenue East.  Three of those families have children here at Congdon.

The Congdon staff is planning a fundraiser/bake sale.   Stop by the Bake Sale table before or after the Talent Show to purchase some yummy home-made treats made by the staff, and make a donation by cash or gift card.   All profits will be given to the displaced families.  The Talent Show is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8.  Check out the sale before or after the show.  If you cannot attend, you can still donate!  See Jane in the office or Kim in the nurse’s office or click http://www.gofundme.com/ta9px8. PHIT meets Thursday, May 7.  Come join us anytime between 8-11 in the PTA room and work on teacher projects.  Younger siblings welcome! This is a great way to help out our great teachers here at Congdon!



TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK is May 4th through the 8th.  Students made a collective give for all Teachers/Staff but if they'd like to honor their teacher in some way they are welcome to do so. If you would like to volunteer and contribute, please contact amygoei@yahoo.com for details.







The 3rd through 5th grade students will be participating in the Fit and Fun Run on Wednesday, May 20th at Public School Stadium (Denfeld High School).  Buses will load at 8:50am, the students will run at approximately 9:10am and return to school at 9:55am.




The Social Concerns Committee is collecting clothing items for the Nurse's Office.  They are in need of size 6 and 8 underwear and size 5-6 and 7-8 sweatpants for boys and girls.  Please drop off donations in the Office.  Thank you!

Book Fair is here!   Shop for all your summer reads.   Great selection will be in stock.   The children will have an opportunity to check out the Book Fair during school hours and shop if they have money.   Tuesday, May 5 through Thursday, May 7 hours will be 8am- 4pm. Thursday, May 21 will be Bike & Walk To School Day at Congdon Park Elementary.  Join us for a fun and energizing way to arrive ready to learn! Students who bike or walk to school the morning of the 21st will receive a free t-shirt. Also, during the Month of May we're encouraging Walking/Biking to school on Wednesdays.  We also encourage you to take the Bus Bike Walk Challenge and commute actively around Duluth! Camp Kitchigami

Day Camp Kitchigami provides an opportunity for children age 4-14 to experience the great outdoors of Duluth’s Chester Bowl.  Camp runs from 9 am – 4 pm every day with free extended care available before and after at Harbor Highlands Community Center.  While at camp kids will get the opportunity to participate in team building games, archery, hiking, canoeing and also will be able to go swimming down at the YMCA most afternoons.  More information and registration is available at http://www.ymcacampmiller.org/day-camp-kitchigami-duluth/. Congdon Park Soccer Club will have open registration from April 15 through June 1 for the fall 2015 season (running August through September). This includes U6 and U8 (coed) and U10, U12, and U13 (boys and girls teams). Eligible birthdates are born on or after August 1, 2008 (minimum birth date for U6) to born on or after August 1, 2002 (oldest birth date for U13).
