Dear Congdon Park Families,
Welcome to almost Spring, well… maybe not. Looks like we will have winter like weather around for a bit longer. This week has been very challenging with the snow and chilly conditions. I want to take a moment to thank our building engineer Dave, and his staff for all they do to support our Congdon kids. They have been busy shoveling sidewalks and moving snow to make sure everyone gets safely in and out of the building. Speaking of safety, please remember to put your cell phones away while driving through marked school zones and please slow down while around Congdon Park. So many of our students walk to school and we need your help to make sure all students and families are safe while crossing the roads and getting into the building.
What’s New With Learning at Congdon Park:
“How can I help my child at home?” All students are being challenged to justify and explain their answers every day. If they are able to explain, then they truly understand their work. To help at home, when your child is reading, ask questions: Why did that happen, how do you know, what was the character thinking, what made the character do that, show me in the text what made you think that…
Our students also need more access to non-fiction text to learn about the world. Congdon Park encourages more non-fiction to be read at school. In many cases, kids will have to cross reference two or three texts to compare and use in making meaning.
On a level more familiar to us, please continue to practice math facts: Doing addition and subtraction together, and multiplication and division together, learning the fact families. Kids will be more fluent in math if they have their facts memorized. Find a good keyboarding computer program and have your child become more fluent on the keyboard - the MCA Assessment that all 3rd-5th grade students take soon is all done on the computer. MCA testing starts the week of March 23rd.
Friday, March 20th is Congdon Park’s Kindergarten Roundup. There will be no school for regular kindergarten students on that day. Prospective parents/guardians will be able to hear what Congdon Park has to offer while the students play and also experience what a real school bus is like. If you have a child entering Kindergarten next school year (2015-2016) please call Jane at 336-8825 to get your child registered.
The Congdon Park Talent Show will be on Friday, May 8th from 6-8 in the Congdon Park auditorium. Auditions for the talent show will be on March 31st and April 2ndrd after school. Everyone is invited to audition. Your talent can be anything you love to do. If you are interested, please make sure to complete the permission slip as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mrs. Harala at 336-8825 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you and Good Luck!
The Think Kids Session with Supt. Gronseth will be held on Monday, March 30, 2015 from 6:30-8:00 in the Congdon Park Library. This will be an opportunity for you to share your thoughts with the Supt. You can also send your thoughts directly to the school board for their consideration. I would encourage you to give thoughtful consideration to the educational needs of the current and future students of Congdon Park School and if you have any specific questions, feel free to contact me at 336-8825.
